Albania
Ismail Kadare said in The Palace of Dreams the history of the Mark-Alem, in the tabir Saray, the palace of dreams of the title is set and continually rising in the hierarchy. This is due less to his abilities, as the policy is in a fictitious Istanbul in the late 19th Century, rather than the Turkish city of Tirana is like (so I learn in the epilogue).
Mark-Alem is passive, carried along his life. Even when he has climbed the highest post, he knows basically always non-do not what it is. The
tabir Saray could be designed by Kafka, a place impenetrable bureaucracy and events, confusing and alienating. Therein lies are weak for me for of such places, I prefer to read directly from Kafka.
I lack the experience of a well-Albanian life to be touched by this novel, really.
